The process of turning something raw and unusable into a functional, livable, beautiful space is hands down the best part of what we get to do here and this project is a great example of just that.

Our Mainline clients came to us with an unfinished basement space and 2000 square feet of bare canvas just ready to be broken up into rooms that fit the needs of their family. Helping to define those areas as well as create a cohesive design for them felt very daunting for our clients, so they called us in to help them in the early planning stages through the finishing details.

BEFORE: A blank slate of 2,000 square feet of space that needed a purpose

After getting to know the family lifestyle, we helped them analyze their focal points and introduced a great layout for their needs. Today we’re revealing the bar area, bathroom, and playroom.

As part of the layout an area was sectioned off to include a guest room. We identified the need for a bathroom that would serve both guests staying down in the space, as well as visitors using the larger public area of the lower level. We made sure there was enough room and easy access shower for older parents. The recessed storage is used for soap, shampoo bottles, etc. This provides the perfect place to keep your essentials, adds valuable space to the shower area, and can be a creative focal point in your bathroom design (we used a contrasting tile in the cubby for interest). We wanted to create a simple style that included some unique layers. Timeless tile and finish selections paired with a fun mirror give the space personality. We designed a sliding door crafted of stained oak that faces into the public spaces for added architectural interest.

The vanity with extra storage ties in with the rustic and modern flow of this bathroom, with soft decor accents and a fun mirror to go with it.

The sliding barn door adds the perfect final touch for this easy to access, modern bathroom. And check out that inlay stool that adds a pretty pattern to the space.

A soft tile palette gives this space a soothing feel.

What’s an entertaining space without a bar/kitchenette? Whether it’s watching the game with beers and cocktails for the adults or a birthday party for the kiddos, this space was built for function and beauty. This nook includes simple, modern elements while keeping the vibe warm. The base cabinetry allows for plenty of storage and we even included shallow depth cabinets under the bar for storing extra party supplies. The statement piece comes from the center of the bar, a Samsung Frame TV for sports watching that looks like a chic piece of art when the game isn’t playing. The sconces and pendant lighting add a layer of sophistication (especially for the evening events), while the chairs welcome you to take a seat and have a drink.

This charming space feels modern and luxe but also super warm and inviting. We love the contrast of the dark cabinetry which highlight the warm tones in the space, long with touches of green plants and wood accessories.

These shaker-style cabinets are a chic statement and conceal a trash & recycling bin and an integrated dishwasher for easy cleanup after the party. Onyx backsplash tile provides a warm, unexpected bright bit of color and the floating shelf is the perfect spot for glasses and art display.

Shallow depth base cabinets along the bar allow for extra storage of party supplies and glassware. The counter height bar provides a seamless flow in the space between the two areas. We sourced luxury vinyl plank flooring that looks like hardwood but is much more durable and waterproof for this entertaining space.

And last but not least is this whimsical playroom for three sweet little girls. Creating a space that’s comfortable and cozy with the right storage for your child is one of the most important factors when decorating a kid’s room. We added tons of elements in their favorite color - pink!

This fun palette includes hints of soft pastels, with rich purple bead board for contrast. The soft colors and white base wall adds a sense calm. The corner nooks allow for a spot each girl can grow with for years.

The floral mural on the left wall adds brightness to the space and includes all of the fun colors these girls love to tie together the room. Big, comfy floor pillows are great for adding softness for lounging. The luxury vinyl plank flooring also extends into this space for easy cleanup from art projects.

This hanging chair is placed in a perfect little nook by the playhouse for curling up with a good book, or just relaxing in, accessorized with a fluffy blanket and accent pillow.

We turned an awkward nook in this L-shaped space into a fun playhouse daybed which makes for an ideal spot to read books together at night, or simply hang out with friends. Storage space under the playhouse to store stuffed animals, books, toys, etc, helps the space look clean and organized at the end of the day. The black chalkboard makes for a playful wall decoration and sits opposite a long art table where they can work on projects. Since there are no exterior walls in the space, we added a repurposed window in the playhouse nook to bring in natural light from the main living area of the lower level. The white neutral base color keeps the look mature for when the girls get older.

This was a fun project to take on and we were able to transform an unfinished space into a functional, beautiful space that met the needs of the family. When we were first introduced to this empty space, we knew we had to get creative and find the right balance of elements to keep it durable and functional while adding in some special details that customized the space for the way this family lives.
